Equinox Portfolio Manager Barry Shamley keeps us up to date with a review of the markets and a look through the crystal ball at what the year holds. He warns that although there is a good chance that the US economy will go into a recession as many feel that the Fed has not cut rates enough to prevent this, the performance of the Dow Jones may well have some surprises as the typical annual profile of the Dow differs between election and non-election years. He says that emerging markets will probably continue to enjoy the limelight and investment flows in the short term but that political uncertainty in SA and the rest of Africa seem to be increasing, which may dampen appetite for the continent.
